Armenian manuscripts in Geneva

The “Armenian Illuminated Manuscripts: Madenataran Collection” exhibition has opened in Geneva, and includes the unique examples of the Gospel of Artsakh, the Gospel of the school of Tatev, Grigor of Narek, Grigor of Tatev, and Davit the Invincible, as well as samples from the well known school of Armenian Cilicia. Also presented are manuscripts brought from the library of the Mkhitarian Brotherhood of Venice and the French national library. The 14th century history of Alexandria, which is not of a religious nature, is also on display.

As learned from the Foreign Ministry’s press service, the opening ceremony took place on September 14, at which education minister Levon Mkrtchyan, Matenadaran director Hrach Tamrazyan, and various local officials took part. The exhibit will remain open until year’s end, and will include photographs by French art expert Reji Laburdet under the title “Mystic Cross,” dedicated to Armenian churches. The exhibition presents the influence that Armenia, located on the crossroads of civilization, has had on the shaping of religion, culture, and philosophy.
