Robert Kocharian: Must remains to be done in education, culture

President Robert Kocharian discussed the status of reforms in higher education at a working meeting today. Participating in the meeting were the minister of education and rectors of state universities.

Kocharian stated the importance of knowing at what pace the reforms were progressing, and if there was enough follow-up on the progress taking place. The president pointed out that necessary reforms had already taken place in the economic sphere, but the same couldn’t be said for education and culture, adding that much still needed to be done.

Education Minister Levon Mkrtchyan spoke about the unifying of education, as well as three areas in which reforms are taking place: investment in the credit system, the three-staged education system, and the formation of a quality system of grading. The university rectors presented work they had completed, as well as current problems and work needing to be done.
The country’s president considered it important to realize reforms in higher education, but that if some areas progress and others don’t, good results can’t be counted on. He also talked about the issue of guaranteeing employment to those graduating from universities. Concerning that, the president said the professions offered should correspond with demands in the workplace.
