“About 40 percent of the surface of the earth is dry land. One fifth of the earth population lives in these regions. Our republic is also considered a dry zone,” Ashot Vardevanyan, responsible person of Nature Protection Ministry UN Program of Combat against Desertification, told a news conference today.
In Vardevanyan’s words, Armenia is qualified in the list of “damaged” countries. He said there are three main factors contributing to desertification. “Cutting trees, over-callosity of some zones and incorrect agriculture,” he named the three.
The major reason of decay in Ararat valley, and consequently of desertification, is salinity. In mountainous regions this is caused by incorrect agriculture.
It must be noted that Armenia has been a member of UN Convention on Combat against Desertification since 1994. A national program against desertification is also implemented in the republic. In the words of Vardevanyan, the convention is implemented on funds released by the state budget, international organizations, donor countries and other ministerial allocations.
