Sicilian Regional Assembly unanimously recognized Armenian Genocide

The Sicilian Regional Assembly unanimously recognized the Armenian Genocide on April 20, becoming the 105th Council to recognize it on the self-government level in Italy, reports the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.

According to the resolution, the Regional Assembly of Sicily expresses solidarity and support to the Armenian people in their struggle for the recognition of this historical truth.

Տhe resolution also calls the local and Italian national governments to jointly promote the events aimed at raising awareness about the massacres for the sake of peace, democracy and peoples’ right to self-determination.

The draft resolution was presented by parliamentarians, Cordaro Salvatore, D'Asero Antonino, Papale Alfio, and Grasso Bernadette Felice.

In November, 2015 an agreement was reached upon the resolution during the meeting of Armenian Ambassador to Italy, Sargis Ghazaryan and President of Sicilian Regional Assembly, Giovanni Ardizzone.
It should be noted, that the Sicilian Regional Assembly was established by Royal Decree, on May 15, 1946. The Regional Assembly has the widest legislative power in Italy.
