International media addresses two-week standoff in Yerevan

Leading international news agencies and media addressed the two-week standoff in Yerevan, Armenia and the surrender of members of Daredevils of Sassoun armed group, who had seized Erebuni police station.

Reuters  quoted the Armenian National Security Service stating that; “The anti-terrorist operation is over. Twenty terrorists have been taken prisoner”.

EuroNews published the video, showing the gunmen surrendering to the police. 1in.am and Radio Liberty were allowed to broadcast their surrender live, yet Radio Liberty refused for safety reasons.

The U.S. Embassy in Armenia also addressed the termination of the standoff, noting about being relieved that it had been resolved peacefully.

In a detailed article, Associated Press  covered the situation since July 17. It provided details about the demands of the members of Daredevils of Sassoun, naming them a “radical opposition group”, who also set off protests that led to unrest in the capital city of Yerevan.

The Associated Press article was reflected in other leading media, like the New York Times, Time, etc.

Al Jazeera reporter Robin Forestier-Walker spoke to the protesters in Yerevan concerning their assessments on the crisis and the domestic political situation.

The article of French Agence France-Presse was also reflected in other news agencies.

The BBC wrote about the police officer, who was shot dead from inside the police station during the standoff on Saturday.
