Constitutional Court fails to elect Yervand Khundkaryan as its new head

The judges of the Constitutional Court of Armenia on Friday failed to elect Yervand Khundkaryan as new chairman of the court.

The sole candidate nominated for the position, Khundkaryan did not gain the required number of votes to be elected chief justice of Armenia’s high court as a result of a secret ballot, Chief of the Constitutional Court Staff Edgar Ghazaryan said in a Facebook post.

According to the Armenia law, each of the nine Constitutional Court judges is eligible to stand as a candidate for the Constitutional Court chairman, both by self-nomination and by being nominated by other judges.

If none of the two or more nominated candidates receives the required number of votes, a second round of elections is held within five days, where two candidates who receive the majority of votes in the first round take part in.
