Western Armenian threatened in Turkey, Garo Paylan warns

Western Armenian, as well as many other languages, are threatened in Turkey, Istanbul-Armenian MP Garo Paylan warned on Sunday, February 21 marked as the International Mother Language Day.

“My mother language – Western Armenian – and numerous other languages are on the verge of extinction,” he wrote on Facebook. “On the International Mother Language Day, I wish for languages to live brotherly in our country.”

21 February was declared the International Mother Language Day by UNESCO in 1999. It has been observed in Armenia since 2005.
