The development of a premium alcoholic beverage market rarely occurs by chance. Sustainable growth is typically the result of deliberate market architecture — thoughtful brand allocation, clear segmentation, competitive balance, and long-term positioning. In Armenia, the creation of such a structure marked a defining stage in the industry’s evolution between 2017 and 2024.
One of the professionals who played a central role in this process is Vlad Balasanyan, Sales Director of Vino&Vino Armenia since 2022. His strategic involvement in portfolio development and international negotiations during this period contributed to measurable structural change within the country’s premium beverage sector.
Introducing Portfolio Engineering to a Developing Market
Rather than accumulating brands based on availability alone, a structured portfolio engineering approach was implemented. This model focused on constructing an assortment designed to function as a cohesive competitive system, guided by:
- price laddering and clear market segmentation,
- competitive balance across wine, spirits, and non-alcoholic premium categories,
- long-term brand sustainability,
- internal portfolio synergy,
- strategic positioning within the HoReCa sector.
Between 2017 and 2024, the company’s portfolio expanded from approximately 80 brands to more than 400 premium brands. During this period, over 250 international producers entered the Armenian market through structured frameworks developed and negotiated under Balasanyan’s leadership. Today, approximately 95% of international partnerships operate under exclusive distribution agreements.
From Reactive Sales to Proactive Market Strategy
This portfolio methodology enabled a shift from a reactive sales model to a proactive market-shaping strategy. Rather than responding solely to existing demand, demand was developed through:
- education and training initiatives,
- structured tastings and thematic events,
- systematic engagement with restaurants and hotels,
- development of curated wine and bar programs across the HoReCa sector.
As a result, premium wine sales increased more than tenfold between 2017 and 2024, while overall company sales volume doubled during the same period.
Category Management and Competitive Stability
A particularly significant advancement was the introduction of category management principles within the premium segment — a practice that had previously been limited in Armenia’s beverage market. This implementation enabled:
- elimination of internal portfolio cannibalization,
- improved profitability within key premium categories,
- stronger negotiation leverage with international producers,
- enhanced long-term stability of the distribution model.
These measures aligned Armenia’s premium distribution practices more closely with established European market standards.
International Integration and Professional Recognition
Active participation and negotiations at major international exhibitions — including Vinitaly, Barcelona Wine Week, Fenavin, Bar Convent Berlin, Wine Paris, Whisky Live Paris, and ProWein Düsseldorf — supported the adoption of advanced portfolio management practices and their adaptation to local market conditions.
Beyond corporate performance, Balasanyan’s expertise has received national professional recognition through his service as an official judge at industry competitions, including Best Sommelier of Armenia 2023 and multiple national bartender competitions. These roles reflect peer-level recognition of his professional authority within the premium beverage sector.
A Structural Contribution to Industry Development
Vlad Balasanyan’s contribution extends beyond sales growth or portfolio expansion. His work addressed the fundamental architecture of Armenia’s premium beverage market, establishing a more mature, competitive, and strategically structured distribution environment.
This experience demonstrates how disciplined portfolio strategy and executive-level leadership can serve as catalysts for systemic industry evolution in emerging premium markets.
