Opposition MP: Pashinyan only 'acts tough' inside parliament

Opposition Hayastan faction MP Artur Khachatryan is skeptical about the chances of Azerbaijan signing a peace agreement with Armenia.

"Why would [Azerbaijani President Ilham] Aliyev sign a peace agreement when Armenia’s current authorities are making every concession without any piece of paper?" Khachatryan told reporters on Friday, responding to a question about whether Aliyev might soon agree to sign a peace deal with Armenia following the recent statements from Yerevan.

Khachatryan pointed out that although the draft peace agreement is said to have been finalized, Baku continues to impose new preconditions on Armenia. They include demands for constitutional changes, the opening of a corridor, the extradition of so-called "war criminals" and the withdrawal of lawsuits against Azerbaijan from international courts.

"I don’t think Azerbaijan will sign any document unless it faces serious pressure," he added.

"Do you really think Pashinyan can put pressure on Aliyev? Pashinyan only 'acts tough' inside the parliament and only when the opposition isn’t present," Khachatryan remarked.
