Ex-mayor: Municipal election results confirm Armenia's ruling party 'is a minority'

The results of Sunday’s municipal elections in Gyumri and Parakar once again demonstrated that Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract Party "remains a hopeless minority", former Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan said.

The ruling party fell short of an absolute majority despite winning most of the votes in Gyumri and suffered a defeat in Parakar.

In a social media post on Monday, Marutyan noted a similar pattern in the 2023 Yerevan elections, where Civil Contract secured just 32% of the vote, an even lower share than in Gyumri.

“Back then, however, 'Jackson turned out to be a woman' – Aram Sargsyan's Republic Party and the Public Voice Party, both claiming to be opposition, helped Civil Contract regain power. The unprincipled and incompetent government fully deserves such an outcome, and it should be cemented in the national elections set for summer 2026. That said, there’s always the possibility that ‘Friday may come sooner than Saturday,’” he wrote.
