Armenian pro-government MP resigns after insulting reporter

MP Vilen Gabrielyan, who represents Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party, has announced resignation after insulting a reporter during Sunday’s municipal elections in Gyumri.

"Dear compatriots, I firmly believe that political responsibility is a cornerstone of political processes. It demands both determination and accountability, qualities I have always had. Sunday's incident in Gyumri was unbecoming of an MP,” he said in a message on Tuesday.

"Therefore, I sincerely apologize to everyone and officially announce my resignation from parliament. I will submit my resignation today in accordance with the established procedure. At the same time, I am declaring my candidacy for the upcoming Civil Contract party board elections. I am convinced that our party needs significant renewal and transformation," the deputy added.
