Armenia and Iran wrapped up joint military exercises on April 10, responding to simulated terrorist attacks on border checkpoints. The two-day drills were designed to enhance border security cooperation between the two countries.
In a social media post on Friday, Sergei Melkonian, a research fellow at the Applied Policy Research Institute of Armenia (APRI Armenia), praised the exercises, the first of their kind in recent years, as a key step forward in bilateral relations.
“These drills mark a new phase in Armenian-Iranian relations,” he stated.
Both Yerevan and Tehran view the exercises as a deterrent in the face of escalating tensions and frequent incidents of gunfire along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. While limited in scale, the drills carry significant political symbolism, the analyst claimed.
Melkonian noted that the exercises were conducted entirely within the territories of each country, likely reflecting Armenia’s cautious stance on hosting Iranian troops. Large-scale military drills between Iran and Armenia could trigger a negative response from the United States.
“Tehran is signaling that the South Caucasus remains a priority for its national security. Despite pressure from the U.S. and Israel, Iran is not neglecting its other priorities,” he stated, pointing out that Iran held similar drills with Azerbaijan in 2024.
“Iranian officials repeatedly stressed the importance of preserving the territorial integrity of regional states during the exercises,” Melkonian added. “As such, the drills carry more political and symbolic significance rather than actual military weight.”
