Armenian parliament rejects opposition statement on WWII victory anniversary

The Armenian National Assembly on Tuesday rejected debates on an opposition-drafted statement marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War (World War II). The proposal, introduced by Pativ Unem faction MP Tigran Abrahamyan, failed to be included in the parliament agenda, receiving 27 votes in favor, 54 against and 2 abstentions.

Abrahamyan criticized the rejection, saying the statement was rooted in "undeniable historical facts" and aimed to honor the institutional continuity between generations and Armenia’s contribution to the war victory. He lamented that the draft statement was debated in the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations not on historical merit, but rather in the context of geopolitical tensions and distorted historical interpretations.

The opposition MP also dismissed arguments that the parliament lacks precedent for such celebratory declarations, noting that while tragic events are often commemorated, it should not preclude the recognition of historically significant victories.
