MP: U.S. warning reflects real risk of war despite Armenian leadership' assurances

Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has criticized a false narrative of peace being promoted both domestically and internationally regarding Armenia’s security environment.

"In recent months, all external actors have been talking about peace – inevitable peace. No one is addressing the risks," the Pativ Unem faction MP told reporters on Tuesday.

Abrahamyan argued that such messages help the Armenian authorities create an illusion of peace, suggesting Armenia faces no serious external threats.

Citing recent comments by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who warned of a “real risk” of renewed armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the lawmaker said the warning stems from Azerbaijan’s large-scale arms acquisitions, military modernization efforts and belligerent rhetoric.

“You would have to be blind or completely uninformed not to recognize the threat,” Abrahamyan claimed.

He stressed that the U.S. statement reflects a genuine risk of renewed conflict despite all reassurances from the Armenian leadership and international actors.
