May 28 marks the anniversary of the founding of the First Republic of Armenia.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited the Sardarapat Memorial to commemorate the occasion along with members of Armenia's legislative and executive branches.
Since early morning, security has been heightened along the roads leading to the memorial.
The Armenian First Republic was declared on May 28, 1918, following the decisive battles of Sardarapat, Bash Abaran and Karakilisa, which enabled the Armenian people to regain their statehood after nine centuries. The republic covered an area of 12,000 km² and had a population of approximately 700,000. It existed until December 2, 1920.
