Catholicos Karekin II urges calm amid outrage over Pashinyan's church remarks

Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II briefly addressed journalists at Yerevan’s Zvartnots Airport last night, choosing not to elaborate on recent tensions.

“Matters concerning the church are discussed within its canonical structures. I have nothing more to add," he said.

Later, speaking to a crowd that had gathered at the airport to show support for him at the request of Homeland Party leader Artur Vanetsyan, Catholicos Karekin II responded to public outrage over Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s recent offensive remarks targeting the Armenian Apostolic Church and its top clergy.

"We recognize your presence here tonight as a sign of your deep concern and devotion to the church. We know that the prime minister's statements have caused widespread indignation among Armenians worldwide," Karekin II said.

He called for restraint and unity. "With God’s mercy and your support, we should overcome these challenges calmly, without excessive emotion or agitation. Your faith strengthens us, and in turn, obliges us, the clergy, to serve you and our homeland with unwavering dedication."

The religious leader urged national solidarity during these difficult times. "Let us avoid any actions that may endanger our unity. Together, we can face every trial and build a brighter future through wisdom, hope and faith," he added.
