Lawyer: No police officer held to account one year after violence at protest in Yerevan

No police officer has been held accountable one year after the violent crackdown on peaceful protesters in Yerevan, lawyer Varazdat Harutyunyan has stated.

In a social media post on Thursday, Harutyunyan recalled that the police used stun grenades against anti-government demonstrators gathered near the National Assembly on June 12 last year.

"Just moments earlier, several protesters had been brutally beaten by riot police – incidents that were captured on video," he wrote.

101 people required medical care as a result of the violence. “Some of the injuries were so severe that the scars from the stun grenades remain visible even a year later," the lawyer stressed.

"Not a single police officer has faced prosecution to date. And none are likely to," he added, pointing to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's speech prior to the crackdown. "Addressing the parliament, the prime minister praised the police and promised to 'reward those officers who act with greater resolve'," Harutyunyan said.
