Expert: Weakened Iran means less secure Syunik

Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan has commented on recent developments in neighboring Iran, highlighting their significance for Armenia. In a social media post on Saturday, he outlined the following key points:

1. Since 2020, Iran has been the only country with an unequivocal stance on Armenia, particularly regarding Syunik Province, in line with its own strategic interests.

2. Iran has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to take practical steps to bolster the security of Syunik, as best evidenced by the military exercises conducted near the Armenian border.

3. Any weakening of Iran – whether due to internal crisis or other similar developments – will inevitably impact its capacity to defend Syunik. It is no coincidence that Turkish President Erdogan has openly acknowledged that Iran is the only country opposing the so-called "Zangezur Corridor”.

4. A weakened Iran means a less secure Syunik, which in turn paves the way for greater Turkish-Azerbaijani pressure and expansionist ambitions.

5. Therefore, Iran’s stability, strength and resilience are currently among the key guarantees of Armenia’s national security.

“In this context, what happens in Iran is not just its problem – it is Armenia’s as well,” the expert stated.
