Chief prosecutor expected to request parliament to strip MP Artur Sargsyan of immunity

Armenian Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan is expected to submit a motion to the National Assembly seeking permission to strip opposition MP Artur Sargsyan of parliamentary immunity and prosecute him, Speaker Alen Simonyan announced on Tuesday.

Vardapetyan has yet to submit a formal request to the parliament.

When asked whether Sargsyan will indeed be stripped of immunity, Simonyan said, “I can’t say anything for now.”

He also reminded reporters that last year the ruling Civil Contract party amended the law, allowing parliament to convene a special session to vote on revoking an MP’s immunity.

Simonyan did not specify when exactly the prosecutor general would bring the matter before the National Assembly.
