Mosquito-borne diseases surge across Europe

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reports an alarming rise in mosquito-borne diseases across Europe, driven by the spread of Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti, and Culex pipiens mosquitoes. These species are now present in more regions than ever before, with Aedes albopictus found in 369 areas across 16 countries, triple the range a decade ago.

In 2024, Europe saw 304 local dengue cases – more than double compared to 2023 – and 1,436 cases of West Nile virus across 19 countries. France also reported six local chikungunya outbreaks earlier than usual, indicating a lengthening transmission season likely linked to climate change, the Heratsi Analytical Center reported.

In response, ECDC launched a new weekly surveillance system to support public health authorities in tracking dengue, chikungunya, Zika and West Nile virus. The public is advised to take preventive measures, including using repellents, wearing protective clothing and eliminating standing water. Environmental and social actions are also key to reducing mosquito breeding and preventing future outbreaks.
