Report warns of increasing pressure on journalists in Armenia

Armenia saw a significant increase in pressure on journalists during the second quarter of 2025, according to the latest report from the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression (CPFE). The findings were presented by CPFE Chairman Ashot Melikyan at a press conference on Tuesday.

The report underscores Armenia’s increasingly polarized media landscape, fueled by the country’s tense sociopolitical environment. “Journalists face pressure and challenges due to their political leanings,” Melikyan noted. “Those affiliated with opposition media frequently clash with government authorities, while reporters from pro-government media outlets encounter resistance from opposition forces.”

A total of 36 acts of pressure against journalists were recorded during the second quarter, 11 more than in the previous reporting period. Among these were two documented cases of physical violence, both involving law enforcement officers.

Violations of the right to access and share information also increased significantly. CPFE registered 39 such cases, up from 29 in the previous quarter. Legal pressure intensified as well, with 16 new defamation and insult lawsuits filed against media workers, raising the six-month total to 29 cases. 

Melikyan warned that if this trend continues, the year may end with a concerning record. He emphasized that international watchdogs view the growing number of lawsuits, especially those filed by public officials, as a serious concern.

Of the new lawsuits, plaintiffs include business owners (6 cases), current and former officials (3), political figures (2), healthcare professionals (2), private individuals (2) and one lawyer.

Another alarming trend revealed in the report is the increase in insults and threats targeting journalists. Melikyan pointed out that at least 17 such cases were instigated by government officials or public servants.
