Analyst dismisses NATO security assumptions for Armenia

During the presentation of his new book "Between the Hammer of Nationalism and the Anvil of Liberalism" in Yerevan on Thursday, political analyst and Lehigh University professor Arman Grigoryan addressed the West’s stance on Armenia's security.

“If the West had serious strategic interests in protecting us or offering security guarantees, we would have known it by now,” Grigoryan stated, pointing to the examples of Ukraine and Georgia. “These are clear cases before our eyes,” he added, emphasizing the lack of Western commitments in the region.

Grigoryan also questioned the viability of relying on NATO for security assurances given Turkey’s membership in the alliance. “Are we seriously expecting NATO to offer guarantees against one of its member states, Turkey? Such discussions are detached from reality. There is no substantial evidence to support these claims,” he said.

The analyst further noted a significant warming of Russia's relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan over the past 15 years. “These shifts are bound to impact Armenia’s foreign policy, positions on the Artsakh issue and its fate,” he stated.
