Armenian government's plan to shorten military service sparks criticism

The Armenian government plans to reduce mandatory military service from two years to 1.5 years starting in summer 2026. The bill, published on the official e-draft platform, aligns with the government’s 2021-2026 program, which envisions a gradual shift from conscription toward contract-based service.

Reactions in Yerevan are mixed. Some citizens surveyed by Panorama.am expressed distrust toward the authorities, saying that “everything is done for their own benefit” and raising concerns that the move could ultimately weaken the Armenian army. Others suggested it might reflect external pressure aimed at reducing the country’s defense capacity.

Several young men who have already completed their service were skeptical as well. “We’re already facing a troop shortage and the new measure would further reduce the number of soldiers, which is not in our interest,” one said, warning that it could result in heavier workloads and decreased vigilance.

At the same time, some respondents welcomed the change, noting that shorter terms would ease the burden on families. “The less, the better. Parents will wait less and children will come home sooner,” a man said.
