Opposition MP: Current Armenian leadership unable to defend national interests

Opposition Hayastan faction head Seyran Ohanyan on Thursday claimed that Armenia’s leaders are under pressure and unable to defend national interests in negotiations with Azerbaijan.

“The current negotiators are facing pressure and cannot adequately represent Armenia’s interests. In such a situation, the people must change their negotiators,” he told reporters in the parliament on Monday.

The MP stressed that any new political force in Armenia must prioritize the creation of real national safeguards, including a strong army and internal resilience, before pursuing new negotiations based on Armenia’s interests.

Ohanyan said the current talks reflect unilateral pressure and rhetoric from the opposing side that contradict existing agreements. He pointed to lingering preconditions in the Armenia-Turkey normalization process and linked the recent intensification of bilateral contacts to the documents signed in Washington.

“The so-called unhindered communication and one of the ideas promoted by the ‘Trump Route’ is the Great Turan road, which is a strategic objective for all Turkic-speaking nations,” Ohanyan stated.
