Pashinyan: No military casualties on Armenia-Azerbaijan border for 19 months

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan claims that Armenia has entered “an entirely new chapter” in its history, marked by what he described as peace with neighboring Azerbaijan.

Speaking at the 7th congress of his Civil Contract party on Saturday, Pashinyan said the peace was “formalized in Washington on August 8 with the presence and support of U.S. President Donald Trump, through a joint declaration signed by me and the Azerbaijani president.”

He emphasized that the declaration was the culmination of a lengthy process. “For 1 year and 7 months now, not a single soldier has been killed or wounded in border shootouts between Armenia and Azerbaijan. That is peace,” Pashinyan said.

He stressed his government’s goal is to extend this period of calm: "We want the 1 year and 7 months to become 2 years and 7 months, 3 years and 7 months, 200 years and 7 months, and so on."

Back in January 2020, Pashinyan wrote on Facebook that 2019 had seen a “historic minimum” in fatalities within the Armenian army. Yet, only months later, Armenia was plunged into the devastating 44-day war in 2020, followed by deadly border clashes in 2022 and 2023. The conflicts left thousands dead, tens of thousands disabled and dozens taken captive or listed as missing.
