Authorities probing murder of Armenian opposition mayor, his friend

Armenia’s Investigative Committee has launched a criminal probe into the fatal shooting of Parakar Mayor Volodya Grigoryan and his friend, police officer Karen Abrahamyan.

The case, opened by the Vagharshapat Investigation Division, is being pursued under articles on murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms. Forensic examinations have been ordered and investigators are carrying out further measures.

The attack took place in Merdzavan, a village in Armavir Province, late last night, leaving two people dead and another injured.

Grigoryan had been elected mayor of Parakar on March 30, leading the opposition Unity bloc to victory with 57% of the vote.
