A citizen of Iran has been arrested in Georgia after attempting to smuggle 200 kilograms of heroin into the country, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) announced on Friday.
Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze reported at the briefing that the cost of imported drugs on the black market exceeded 50 million, the local media reported.
Darakhvelidze said that the Iranian citizen entered Georgia through the Red Bridge border checkpoint and carried the drugs hidden in a truck loaded with fish food. The detainee faces up to 20 years imprisonment or a life sentence.
“We continue investigative efforts to identify other accomplices of the crime,” Darakhvelidze said.
