Armenia rejects Azerbaijan's demand for constitutional change, minister says

Armenia rejects Azerbaijan’s demand to change its constitution as a precondition for the conclusion of a bilateral peace agreement, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Yerevan with Finnish Foreign Minister and OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Elina Valtonen, Mirzoyan emphasized that any constitutional changes in Armenia are solely a domestic matter.

“As before, there is no such issue as constitutional change being discussed as a coordinated agenda item with Azerbaijan,” Mirzoyan stated. “It is for the Armenian people to decide whether to amend their constitution or adopt a new one.”

The minister underlined that Armenia has never made and will not make any commitments to third parties regarding changes to its constitution.

“Azerbaijan continues to insist on this precondition for a peace agreement, but we do not accept it,” he added.
