Homeland Party member urges efforts to defeat Pashinyan's party in local elections

The Homeland Party will appear as number eight on the ballot in the upcoming Vagharshapat municipal elections, a number its member Sos Hakobyan called symbolic of “eternity and new life”.

Speaking after a Central Electoral Commission meeting on Saturday, Hakobyan said the party’s campaign seeks to end the ruling Civil Contract party’s control in the community. 

“We must do everything we can to remove Civil Contract from power in the local elections,” he stated, adding that the Homeland Party rules out any cooperation with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party.

The Homeland Party has nominated writer and public figure Khachik Manukyan, who lost his son Vachagan in the 2020 Artsah war, as its mayoral candidate. Hakobyan described Manukyan as “a highly respected and moral person with great life experience”, expressing confidence that he will gain broad public trust.

Hakobyan said it was too early to discuss post-election coalitions but expressed hope that the results would end Civil Contract’s rule in the community. “Our goal is to win and form a new government in Vagharshapat,” he said.

The Vagharshapat City Council elections are scheduled for November 16.
