Opposition MP: Armenian leadership faces ‘turning point’ in confrontation with church

Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has warned that the Armenian government is entering a “decisive and nervous phase” amid its confrontation with the Armenian Apostolic Church.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Abrahamyan, secretary of the Pativ Unem faction, said that the authorities’ actions against the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin reveal growing anxiety within Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s administration.

“Pashinyan realizes that such an adventure will not be accepted unanimously, even within his own team,” Abrahamyan wrote, suggesting that some officials are hesitant or fear the consequences. He added that the confrontation could become a rallying point for public unity against the ruling regime.

Abrahamyan argued that all government officials now share responsibility for Pashinyan’s policies, including the surrender of Artsakh and his anti-church campaign.

“The situation is a turning point for the authorities as well,” he stated.
