Mayor: Yerevan’s landfill issue can't be resolved in a year

Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan said the city’s landfill issue has been persisting for 75 years and cannot be resolved within a single year. Speaking at parliamentary debates on the 2026 state budget on Friday, Avinyan emphasized that while waste management is a top priority, it requires time and sustained effort.

He noted that the Yerevan Municipality has launched a two-stage tender process involving private partners, with four major companies having already applied. “In the first phase, companies will outline their proposed solutions to the landfill problem. The best one will advance to the second stage,” Avinyan explained.

The mayor added that another option involves cooperation with the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure and international financial institutions. However, he expressed concern about the time such a process might take, noting that the number of landfill fires has been increasing.
