Armenian opposition MP warns of Azerbaijani strategic gains amid border process

Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has accused the Armenian authorities of diverting public attention with short-term domestic measures while Azerbaijan strengthens its strategic position in the border delimitation process.

In a social media post on Thursday, Abrahamyan, an MP from the opposition Pativ Unem faction, criticized the government’s handling of border issues, recalling that around a year and a half ago officials announced the start of delimitation in the border areas of Baghanis, Voskepar and Kirants, a move he claimed was initiated under Azerbaijani pressure.

“Everyone knows the consequences,” he wrote, noting that at the time the government presented the process as unavoidable, arguing it was the path through which Armenia could regain control over Artsvashen and Armenian territories seized by Azerbaijan between 2021 and 2023.

"Azerbaijan took the surrendered villages, while the broader delimitation process has since continued behind the scenes," Abrahamyan stated.

He warned that it remains unclear how the next stages will unfold, what further demands Azerbaijan may make or whether the process will be applied consistently along the entire border.

“I believe Azerbaijan will advance the process in directions favorable to itself, while keeping the issue of strategically important occupied territories unresolved,” Abrahamyan said.

He accused Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's government of attempting to occupy the domestic agenda with “flour, rice and asphalt”, a reference to social programs and infrastructure projects, while Azerbaijan focuses on consolidating its strategic advantage.
