Armenian analyst says Trump's new security strategy marks sharp shift from Biden era

Armenian political analyst Suren Sargsyan says U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly released National Security Strategy marks a clear break from the framework outlined under former President Joe Biden.

Speaking to Panorama.am on Monday, Sargsyan noted that the document includes "new and interesting wording" and reflects noticeably different priorities, particularly regarding China and Russia.

“It is a comprehensive document that will be widely analyzed and discussed,” he said.

According to Sargsyan, the strategy underscores intensified competition with China while also emphasizing cooperation with Russia. It also signals that Europe “needs to begin implementing changes”, he said.

At its core, the strategy builds on the “America First” concept, which Sargsyan said serves as the document’s guiding principle. The analyst also pointed out Trump's emphasis on conflict resolution as a path to securing long-term peace.

Armenia and the South Caucasus receive only a brief mention. The strategy references the region once in the context of Trump having “resolved the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan”.

“This is the only paragraph that touches on Armenia and the broader region,” Sargsyan said. “It doesn’t mean the South Caucasus is being removed from U.S. interests. This is simply a very global document.”
