Armenian political analyst warns of growing external dependence and authoritarianism

Political analyst Ara Poghosyan has warned that a decline in Armenia’s sovereignty on the international stage is being offset by the consolidation of authoritarian rule at home.

In a social media post on Friday, Poghosyan argued that frequent official rhetoric about independence and sovereignty masks the country’s deepening dependence on external powers. “The more government propagandists speak about independence and sovereignty, the faster Armenia sinks into vassal-like relations with its enemies,” he wrote.

According to Poghosyan, the loss of autonomy abroad is compensated for by tighter political control domestically. He said that as Armenia becomes more reliant on foreign actors, governance inside the country grows increasingly authoritarian.

“Put differently, the more vassal relationships Armenia develops with external players, the harsher the authoritarian regime that will be established in the country,” Poghosyan said.

He concluded by cautioning the public against political narratives that emphasize sovereignty as an absolute value, suggesting that such language is often used by those who are most willing to compromise it.
