Snowfall and icy conditions in Yerevan leaves 177 injured, mostly elderly – councilor

At least 177 people have been hospitalized in Yerevan with injuries linked to uncleaned snow and icy conditions, most of them elderly, a municipal council member said on Friday.

Kristine Vardanyan, an opposition member of the Yerevan City Council, said she had formally requested data from the Municipality on weather-related injuries. According to the response she received, 117 people sought treatment at medical facilities under the city’s jurisdiction between 31 December 2025 and 8 January 2026. Of them, 63 were pension-age patients.

The breakdown provided by the Municipality’s Health Department showed seven injured were under 18, 27 were aged 19-40, 20 were between 41-60 and 63 were over 60.

“This is only the number of those taken to hospitals under the Municipality,” Vardanyan wrote on Facebook, adding that one elderly visitor who had come to Yerevan for heart treatment ended up hospitalized with a fractured hip after slipping. “The family had to cover the medical costs,” she said.

Vardanyan questioned who should be held accountable for the injuries and who would pay for the treatment expenses.
