Kocharyan claims unrivalled experience as opposition prepares for elections

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan on Thursday said that no other political figure in Armenia matches his breadth of experience in wartime leadership, state governance and the private sector, arguing that this track record could be used in the country’s interests.

“There is no one in Armenia with experience on this scale,” Kocharyan told reporters, citing his time as president and prime minister, alongside more than a decade working in the private sector. “My knowledge is very diverse, and that unique experience can serve the interests of the Republic of Armenia and its people.”

Kocharyan said he spent 12 years working with Russia’s AFK Sistema conglomerate, including as a member of its board of directors. He added that he was well compensated and received part of his salary in shares, saying he still holds a small stake in the company.

Kocharyan said Armenia’s opposition is likely to contest upcoming elections in three or four large blocs. The Hayastan alliance, he said, is inclined to retain its current format, with a final decision expected in February.

Asked whether he would lead the alliance’s electoral list, the ex-president said the decision would be made pragmatically, based on opinion polls. If they show he can secure the most votes, he would top the list. Otherwise, another candidate would take the lead. Current polling suggests he remains the strongest contender, Kocharyan stated.

He also said his Hayastan alliance is entering the election race from a stronger position than in 2021.
