Opposition MP says government campaign against Armenian church has failed
Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan claims the Armenian government’s efforts to undermine the Armenian Apostolic Church have failed.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Abrahamyan, who represents the Pativ Unem faction, stressed that authorities launched a swift campaign against the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin but were forced to back down amid strong public resistance.
“This is one area where the authorities’ blitzkrieg has failed,” the MP wrote.
He accused the government of refusing to admit defeat and warned that continued pressure on the church would further damage its political standing.
“This campaign has stuck in their throats,” he said, adding that most Armenians support the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and understand the consequences of targeting a centuries-old institution.
