Aliyev seeks Armenia's 'total capitulation', analyst says

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s rhetoric on peace talks signals that his ultimate demand is Armenia’s complete capitulation, Armenian military analyst Hayk Nahapetyan said on Wednesday.

Speaking outside the UN office in Yerevan during a symbolic protest, Nahapetyan warned that Baku is preparing to pursue international legal action against hundreds of Armenians, including former presidents, defense ministers and military chiefs, whom Aliyev has branded as “criminals”.

“Drawing parallels between the trials in Baku and the Nuremberg proceedings, Aliyev implies that only some of the so-called Armenian criminals are currently on trial,” Nahapetyan told reporters. “Nuremberg was not only about punishing criminals – it was about Germany’s total capitulation. Aliyev’s real demand is Armenia’s unconditional acceptance of all Azerbaijani terms.”

In a recent interview with France 24 in Munich, Aliyev compared Armenian prisoners to Nazi leaders tried after World War Two, saying their alleged crimes were “even worse” than those committed by the Nazis.

Nahapetyan said such statements underscore that Baku’s approach to negotiations is not about compromise but about forcing Yerevan into submission.
