Armenian archbishop's detention extended

A Yerevan court on Thursday extended by two months the detention of Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, who is standing trial alongside 17 supporters accused of plotting “terrorist acts” in a bid to seize power in Armenia.

Judge Karen Farkhoyan announced the decision after hearing arguments from prosecutors and the defense lawyers.

“The grounds and legal conditions for the preventive measure applied to the defendant at this stage have not decreased or changed. Alternative measures cannot ensure the defendant's lawful and proper conduct,” Farkhoyan said.

Galstanyan's detention was extended until April 25, 2026. Prosecutors had sought a three-month extension.

Shouts of “Shame” were heard at the courtroom following the ruling.
