Winter heat records expected across Europe, says Armenian expert

Unseasonably warm air sweeping north from North Africa is set to trigger hundreds of new temperature records across Europe, an Armenian meteorologist says.

According to Levon Azizyan, director of Armenia’s Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Centre, the hot air mass is already driving extreme conditions in parts of Africa, with temperatures reaching 42C in Senegal, 35C in Morocco and 33C in the Canary Islands.

The same system is now moving into Europe, where forecasters expect unprecedented winter warmth. Azizyan noted that countries including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany and much of Eastern Europe are likely to register both maximum and minimum temperature records in the coming days.
