Armenian opposition MP criticizes Yerevan authorities over city management

Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has criticized the authorities over mismanagement and deteriorating conditions in the capital, Yerevan.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Abrahamyan, a member of the Pativ Unem faction, said he had recently listened to excerpts from a Yerevan Municipality meeting broadcast on radio and was struck by a lack of competence.

“If someone unfamiliar with our country had listened to it, they would have thought a newly elected mayor was just beginning to get acquainted with the city problems and work,” the MP wrote.

He described the discussion as poor in both quality and substance, alleging that it consisted of “artificial criticism” of department heads and "low-level exchanges".

The lawmaker also accused the current authorities of allowing infrastructure in Yerevan to deteriorate. He said road resurfacing lasts less than a year, newly laid paving stones only a season and that streets and sidewalks are covered in dust and debris.

“They cannot even carry out basic patchwork repairs,” Abrahamyan said, stressing that traffic, public transport and broader infrastructure projects had been mishandled.
