Armenian ruling party nominates Vanik Ohanyan to lead parliament's health committee

Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party has nominated Vanik Ohanyan, acting head of the Vanadzor community, to chair the National Assembly Standing Committee on Healthcare.

Speaker Alen Simonyan announced the nomination at the start of Wednesday’s parliament session, citing Article 135 of the parliament’s rules of procedure.

Civil Contract faction secretary Artur Hovhannisyan introduced Ohanyan, noting that he graduated from Yerevan State Medical University’s Dentistry Faculty. Ohanyan has twice been elected to the parliament on the party’s list and, since December 23, 2021, has served as acting mayor of Vanadzor after the detention of its elected mayor, Mamikon Aslanyan.

Addressing lawmakers, Ohanyan contrasted what he described as “Real Armenia’s” current healthcare system with the one that operated over the past three decades.
