Iranian drone strike on Kuwaiti tanker a warning to U.S., analyst says

A drone strike on a crude oil tanker anchored at Dubai port late on Monday may signal a warning from Iran amid escalating tensions with the United States, Iran specialist Vardan Voskanyan states.

Writing on social media, Voskanyan said Iran targeted the Kuwaiti-owned supertanker Al Salmi, one of the world’s largest oil carriers, while it was fully loaded at port. The reported strike came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened action against Iran’s energy infrastructure if Tehran refuses to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept U.S. negotiation terms.

“The strike on the oil tanker was likely intended as a warning, signaling that Iran’s response to any similar action by the United States would be tough,” the analyst noted.

He stressed that further escalation could have severe humanitarian consequences across the region, adding potential strikes on desalination facilities in Israel or Gulf Arab states could trigger widespread water shortages, placing millions at risk and rendering some areas uninhabitable.
