Armenia pension rise draws mixed public reaction amid inflation concerns

The Armenian government’s move to raise pensions by up to 10,000 drams from April 1 has drawn mixed reactions, with some citizens criticizing the increase as insufficient to offset rising living costs.

While the authorities framed the move as social support, several pensioners linked it to upcoming elections and said it fails to address ongoing inflation, which continues to erode purchasing power.

“The pension increase by 10,000 drams, but you go into a shop with 100,000 drams and still end up in debt,” one pensioner said, citing rising prices for food, utilities and other essentials.

Others highlighted the frequent price hikes on everyday items, describing the increases as unpredictable and making budgeting difficult.

Some respondents also criticized lawmakers, pointing to parliamentary bonuses and suggesting that reducing such payments could provide more meaningful support to retirees.
