Armenian conscripts' families protest unequal service terms

Relatives of Armenian conscripts protested outside the Defense Ministry on Friday, demanding equal treatment over discrepancies in the length of mandatory military service.

Protesters said it was unjust that some men born in the same year serve 18 months, while others serve two years, following recent legal changes. “The law should apply equally to everyone. There should be no distinction,” one participant said, adding that their sole demand was fairness and equality.

Under reforms linked to the 2025 winter conscription cycle, which began on January 7, newly drafted soldiers serve 18 months. The changes do not apply retroactively to those conscripted during the 2025 summer draft, who remain subject to a two-year term.

Parents at the protest said the discrepancy was causing psychological stress among soldiers and fostering a sense of injustice. Some suggested that if the law cannot be amended, the authorities should grant additional leave to those serving longer terms to effectively reduce their service period.

The protesting families said they had appealed to Defense Minister Suren Papikyan and were awaiting a response. Some also called on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to intervene and resolve the issue.
