Armenian opposition MP accuses Azerbaijan of cultural destruction, criticizes government inaction

Armenian opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has accused Azerbaijan of pursuing a systematic campaign to erase Armenian cultural heritage, while criticizing the Armenian government for its failure to respond.

Writing on social media on Monday, Abrahamyan said recent developments reflect a broader policy by Azerbaijan that goes beyond territorial disputes to include the destruction of Armenian historical and religious sites. He pointed to reports about the demolition of St. Hakob Church in Stepanakert, calling it the latest example of a deliberate attack on Armenian heritage.

“Azerbaijan has long been associated with desecration and vandalism,” Abrahamyan wrote. “The real question is how the Armenian state chooses to fight back.”

He criticized the authorities in Yerevan as weak and complacent, saying their lack of response “opens the door to Azerbaijani atrocities and distortions” as Baku promotes its narrative over Armenian settlements and monuments.
