Lawyer alleges bias, political motives in Samvel Karapetyan's case

A lawyer for Armenian businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan on Wednesday accused prosecutors of lacking impartiality and pursuing a politically motivated case after a court adjourned proceedings in the high-profile trial.

Speaking to reporters outside the Anti-Corruption Court following a recess, Karapetyan’s attorney, Aram Vardevanyan, said the hearing had been postponed under “unclear circumstances” and would resume on April 17.

“Even one hour is significant for us,” Vardevanyan said, arguing that the delay had effectively deprived the defence of two full days. “That time could have been used to ensure proper participation in political processes. I cannot accept the proportionality, necessity or reasonableness of such a decision.”

Karapetyan is the leader of the Strong Armenia party, which is preparing to run in upcoming parliamentary elections.

The defence is seeking the removal of house arrest measures imposed on Karapetyan, arguing they are no longer justified. Vardevanyan referred to a March 14 ruling by Anti-Corruption Court judge Vardges Stepanyan, which extended the measure by one month on the basis that investigative actions were ongoing.

He noted that prosecutor Argam Dallakyan did not appeal that decision at the time but is now requesting a three-month extension, despite the investigation having concluded and an indictment already approved.

“At that stage, the prosecutor agreed that a one-month extension was warranted solely due to ongoing investigative steps,” Vardevanyan said. “Now, with the pre-trial investigation completed and no active measures underway, he is seeking a three-month extension. This is inconsistent.”

Vardevanyan further alleged that Dallakyan could not be considered an impartial prosecutor. “This is not a legal process,” he said. “What we are witnessing is political persecution. Only in such a context can such actions be explained.”
