Armenian opposition candidate warns of Azerbaijani interference in elections

Armenian opposition figure Arman Tatoyan, the prime ministerial candidate of the Wings of Unity party, has urged the European Union to take action against what he described as unlawful Azerbaijani interference in Armenia’s upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7.

In s video posted on social media on Wednesday, Tatoyan said he had sent a letter to EU Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, calling on Brussels to expand its toolkit against foreign meddling to include Azerbaijan. He argued that senior Azerbaijani officials, along with media outlets under the control of President Ilham Aliyev and the Defense Ministry, have openly declared their intention to ensure that Armenia’s leadership remains in the hands of forces aligned with Baku’s strategic objectives.

“They are threatening the Armenian people with war, issuing new territorial demands, and making it clear that everything must be done to secure the re-election of Nikol Pashinyan and the Civil Contract party,” Tatoyan stated.

The EU previously announced measures to counter Russian interference in Armenia’s elections. Tatoyan insisted that the same standards must apply to all external actors. “If we are fighting against foreign interference in elections, the approach must be equal and extend to every country making such an attempt,” he said.
