Robert Kocharyan: May 9 carries both 'joy and bitterness'

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan issued a message marking May 9, which commemorates the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, the liberation of Shushi in 1992 and the establishment of the Artsakh Defense Army.

“May 9 is the day of our historic victories. They were forged through the selfless heroism of our fathers and grandfathers, sons and brothers,” Kocharyan wrote, noting that the date carries both “joy and, unfortunately, bitterness.”

Kocharyan, who is the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition Hayastan bloc, said the lessons of sacrifice and resilience will empower Armenians to achieve “new feats of peaceful and creative work.” He added that the memory of past struggles, coupled with confidence in the future, would help strengthen the homeland and secure “real and dignified peace".

“Eternal glory to our heroes! Congratulations on May 9!” he concluded.
