Armenian opposition candidate detained

Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) detained opposition politician Andranik Tevanyan overnight, placing him in handcuffs before transferring him to the Investigative Committee. Tevanyan, who is standing for parliament on the Prosperous Armenia Party ticket, later said he had voluntarily presented himself to investigators to challenge what he described as groundless accusations. He urged supporters to remain resilient, continue their struggle and participate in the upcoming elections.

The Prosecutor General’s Office confirmed that criminal proceedings have been initiated against Tevanyan under Article 418.1 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, which covers treason. Officials allege his actions meet the criteria for the offence, though no further details have been disclosed.
